Our vehicle, commonly called a bakkie (pronounced "bucky") in front of Andre's Gasthuis (Guesthouse), Middelburg, Republic of South Africa. The word bakkie is Afrikaans for a pickup. Andre's was our home for the rainy night of April 30. We drove from Johannesburg to Knysna on April 30 and May 1, and this was our stop for rest and refreshment. The experience was similar to staying on a grandparent's farm in the 1950s. Breakfast was a typical farm breakfast, with fried eggs, bacon and toast, but the bacon in the RSA is more like American ham. The hostess is a friendly Afrikaaner (a South African of Dutch descent) who urged us to come back again. The drive from Joburg to Knysna runs through a number of Afrikaaner rural towns and villages, with interesting architecture. Because it is now winter here, we don't see many crops growing, but there are plenty of tilled fields in preparation for sowing.
