The start of the road from Avontuur to Knysna over Prince Alfred's Pass. We had just driven on a regular two-lane tarred road through the town of Uniondale, and when we looked at the map the most direct route for the final 60k or so to Knysna was the Avontuur Road. What we couldn't tell from the map was that the road is a harrowing unpaved ascending mountain path full of switchbacks. We had picked up our second hitchhiker of the trip, a teenager named Keith trying to get from his grandmother's home back to Knysna for the start of the school week. Keith cheerfully told us that he would not have been able to get a ride if he stood on the road at night, because he would have been taken for a ghost due to the famed treachery of the road and the frequent accidents. Jeff and the bakkie successfully navigated the switchbacks, even with oncoming traffic traveling at what Gina felt were higher than safe speeds for the conditions. We all made it to Knysna in one piece.
