Saturday, December 16: We left the Savute campground around 8 a.m., driving past the display of elephant and antelope bones located outside the gatekeeper's office, to travel through the Chobe forest reserve to Kasane. Though we were given an estimate by the gatekeeper that four or five hours would be needed to navigate the combination of red clay/sand and tar roads, we made great time and arrived before noon (businesses in Botswana typically close at 1 p.m. on Saturdays). Our early arrival provided time to check e-mail at an Internet cafe, arrange a room for the night at a very nice bed and breakfast, the Water Lily Lodge, and shop for food suitable for more camping. We planned to get an early start on Sunday morning for Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe using the border crossing from Botswana to Zimbabwe at Pandamatenga.
