We took a late afternoon drive around the outskirts of the city, which is where we saw the grounds of the Bulawayo Bowling Club.
Last May, while still on the Indian Ocean coast of the continent before we came to Botswana, we saw a bowling club in the RSA town of George. The sport of lawn bowling is common in countries which are influenced by British culture, such as Zimbabwe and parts of the RSA. Unlike the sport referred to as bowling in the U.S., the goal of lawn bowling is to roll a slightly asymmetrical ball, or "bowl," closer to a smaller white ball, referred to as the "jack" or "kitty," than an opponent.
Another interesting building in Bulawayo is the National Gallery (of Art), housed downtown in a beautiful building resembling those in the French Quarter of New Orleans, with elaborate exterior ironwork. The National Gallery began as the home of a wealthy businessman in the late nineteenth century, and changed hands and purposes several times during the ensuing century. It is kept in stellar condition, inside and out. Studio space for working artists and a small cafe surround a courtyard in back of the main building. We spent a glorious Tuesday afternoon looking at world-class art and drinking coffee in the cafe.
