We obtained visas, vehicle insurance and all the other required paperwork to bring the bakkie into Zambia and were on our way to the home of Trevor and Monica Robson on Friday, December 22. The road through Kafue to Lusaka was in impressive condition; improvements and expansion were in progress in several areas.

We stopped briefly at a takeaway in Kafue, a small town, to pick up a midmorning snack. Jeff selected a Russian (a large sausage resembling bratwurst); I pointed to a paper container visible through the glass sides of an electric warmer in which were three pieces of golden fried chicken. As the clerk reached for the container I realized that the chicken pieces were beaks and feet. I later was told that these parts of the chicken are considered delicacies. Although eating them is as logical as eating other parts of a chicken, sometimes custom overrules logic. I bought two drumsticks instead. They were delicious.
