Yes, we're guilty of neglecting to post on this blog for too long. However, nothing particularly noteworthy has happened during the past few weeks; life has become routine, which happens eventually no matter where we are in the world. Since the Tocadi office will be closed on Friday and Monday for the upcoming Easter holiday, we plan a diversionary excursion to the Makgadikgadi Pans, Baines' Baobabs, Nata, and the surrounding area. There will be a new blog entry with photos shortly after our return.
Meanwhile, here are photos of the most exciting event seen around here lately. One day last week we noticed one of the two Tocadi cats gazing up into a section of the hedge that encloses our front yard. This was noticeable because he howled loudly as he gazed. The object of his fascination was a chameleon, which he clearly wanted to capture but also seemed wary of approaching. Our "Reptiles of Southern Africa" book indicates that chameleons will bite if threatened, and the cat may have had an unpleasant encounter with one in the past. After this photo was taken, the cat climbed up into the bushes and made two attempts with his paws to grab the creature, but he wouldn't put his face or mouth near it, so his efforts at capture failed. Chameleons, which we have seen walking and climbing slowly in the trees near the house, apparently can move quickly when motivated.
